I had somewhere I wanted to submit my robot librarian story, but it appears they’ve closed to open submissions. Oh, well. It was pretty much going to be a shot for the moon anyway. My second choice appears to be in the process of switching over to a flash market, so that’s out; the story is about 500 words too long for flash. I have one more spot I’ve got bookmarked at home that I’ll try tonight.
If you haven’t had a chance yet, you should head over to A Thousand Faces and read the current issue, which contains several excellent stories. It’ll only be up for a couple more weeks before the next edition. After that you’ll have to order it.
This weekend, Hellboy II! I’m a huge fan of the Hellboy comics, and the films have done a pretty decent job of adapting them. There are some pretty big differences, but the core of the character is largely intact.
(One thing about the movies that bugs me is the whole “secret” aspect of Hellboy and the BPRD. In the comics there’s no secret; HB was featured on the cover of TIME shortly after he was found, and the rest is history. Pretty much everyone knows him, and no one bats an eyelash when this big red demon shows up to help them out. It’s great. But I digress, as usual.)
I am a bad person because I haven’t had a chance to see Wall·E yet.
Assuming you haven’t wandered over here from there already, go check out “Aftershocks” over at Every Day Fiction. This story came out of a challenge issued by the editors there, and I’m quite proud of the results! If you like mysteries, you definitely want to read it.
There are a couple of older posts about the story here and here.
Thanks to James for sending me this link on how to pronounce the main character’s name. I must admit I was apparently mangling it quite badly (I was saying it PAD-er-oh). It’s actually a pretty tough name to get my simple American tongue around. Nutty Welsh.
Lyndon Perry over at The Fix has reviewed the whole of issue 4 of A Thousand Faces. There’s a lengthy paragraph on “Shades of Red“! It is glowing!
Thanks to Jens for the heads up!
Every Day Fiction has posted their Table of Contents for May, and it looks like my mystery flash piece “Aftershocks” will be appearing there on the 22nd. I’ll post another reminder here the day of, of course. I’m particularly proud of this piece.
And I believe this marks the first time anyone has referred to me as an “author.”
Issue 4 of A Thousand Faces has gone live! My epic superhero story “Shades of Red” is included. Check it out!
I just found out “Crush” is in the Top Stories section over at Every Day Fiction. It snuck in there at some point, I guess. It’s at 19 at the moment.
I’ve just received confirmation that my story “Shades of Red” will be appearing in the next issue of A Thousand Faces, due out at the end of this month! In addition, friends Jens and Erin are also included! So I can promise at least three awesome stories in this one issue! I will, of course, post again when the issue goes live. Exciting! I may even be doing some promoting of the book at Cape! this year. More info on that later.
I’ll be heading out to the Dallas Comic Con this weekend. I’ll be there primarily to meet Christina Hendricks to add to my wall of “Firefly” alum, but they always run a good ship out there, so there will be plenty else to do.
I just got word that Every Day Fiction has accepted my 1000-word mystery story, “Aftershocks.” I’m particularly proud of this piece, so this is awesome news.
Thanks to everyone in the writing group who helped me polish it up!
Slip on over to Every Day Fiction and spend five minutes checking out my flash piece “Crush.” This is my fist published work! It’s exciting and terrifying at the same time. While you’re there, sign up for a subscription, there’s great stuff over there.
Speaking of EDF, I’ve gotten excellent feedback and very positive reaction to “Aftershocks,” my flash mystery story. I’ve already polished it up some, so I’ll probably tweak it a little more today and submit it. I’m quite proud of this one.
Sorry for the lack of posting. I haven’t worked on any exercises, and am thinking hard about my 1000-word mystery. I have started something, but it looks more like the end of Clue or Murder by Death than I’d like.
I’ve received another acceptance, from, wait for it…OMG! The Book of Awesome Stuff. It’s a funny and surreal flash piece involving ice skaters and robots called “Justin’s Ice Dream,” very loosely based on an actual dream I had years ago. It was rejected (under a different title) by a couple of places before, and I’d pretty much given up on it as being simply too strange. It seems I was wrong! OMG! should be out this summer.
Joining me in OMG! will be Stephanie from the writing group (a link to her blog is over there on the right somewhere). Her story involves an island of hawtsome women, which automatically makes it better.
